Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines have laid the cornerstone for their new joint venture EME Aero in Jasionka, Poland, dedicated to overhaul and maintenance of Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engines.
Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines laid the cornerstone for their new joint venture, EME Aero in Jasionka, near the Polish city of Rzeszów, on 28th September.
The 40,000m2 facility, which will be dedicated to overhaul and maintenance of Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engines, has a planned annual capacity of more than 450 shop visits. EME Aero will have full capability for PW1100G-JM, PW1500G and PW1900G engines, including overhaul, maintenance, performance restoration and a range of repairs.
GTF engines power five regional and narrowbody platforms, with the A220 and the A320neo family from Airbus and the Embraer E190-E2 already in commercial service. The total investment for the service center, which is due to enger service by the end of 2019, is €150m by 2020.
Work on the construction site began in mid-June this year. The area has already been levelled and over 60,000 cubic meters of soil have been moved. The building platform is almost complete and foundation works have begun. The construction site for EME Aero service centre consists of about 160,000m3.
Around 70 employees are already on board at EME Aero and the workforce is expected to reach 1,000 employees by 2026. The company is investing several million euros in staff training, which will take place in the newly built training center in Jasionka.
