Portugal formalizes its acquisition for five Embraer KC-390

The Government of Portugal has formally signed the order for five military transport aircraft Embraer KC-390. An acquisition approved by the Portuguese Council of Ministers on July 11.

On August 22, the Portuguese government has officially signed a contract to purchase five transport aircraft Embraer KC-390. The ceremony took place on the Brazilian manufacturer’s site at Évora. The order — which cost was not specified — includes a flight simulator and several support services. The Portuguese air force expects to take delivery of its Embraer KC-390s from 2023. The KC-390 aircraft is a multi-mission airlifter able to perform different types of military and civilian missions including, superior cargo and troops transport, aerial delivery and aerial refueling capabilities, humanitarian support, medical evacuation, search and rescue, and firefighting.

Portugal is from the beginning a partner of the KC-390 program. Its industries manufacture aerial structures of the aircraft developed by Embraer. The Portuguese government approved the acquisition last July. The KC-390 should enter into service within the Brazilian air force during the third quarter, this year.
