On July 15, Indra introduced its anti-drone strategy as well as its vision of such systems, ever more requested. The Spanish company based itself on the technical evolution of RPASs and their utilisation, to think about the means that must be set to protect critical infrastructures. These solutions would especially need to be compatible with the air traffic management system implemented in airports and hence take into account conventional aviation and collaborative drones moving in the area.

To meet the needs of critical sites with, very often, distinct characteristics, Indra estimates the best way is to set convertible systems to adapt to the infrastructures that need to be protected. To do so, it is also necessary to be able to combine sensors and counter-measures — once adapted to the environment in which they will be implemented.

The use of several sensors will especially allow to face the evolution of the technological context and especially with the advent of autonomous drones and intelligent swarm. The surveillance systems will need to adapt to be able to detect simultaneously the presence of multiple RPASs.

The counter-measure systems must also evolve to adapt to the protected site. “Something especially important for their use at airports to avoid interfering with radar and electronic systems”, reminds Indra.

The Spanish company also enhances the necessity to collaborate with regulatory authorities and seems to push toward an enlargement of the utilisation frame of counter-measures. “The regulatory framework must clarify who can use an anti-drone system, under what conditions and to what extent.”
