Frankfurt Airport revises expansion plans

Fraport AG shakes up construction schedule for future Terminal 3 in response to strong passenger growth.

Fraport AG, the owner and operator of Frankfurt Airport, has reorganised the construction schedule for the future Terminal 3, which will expand the airport's capacity by 20 million passengers when fully complete. The new terminal building will feature three tiers — G, H and J.

The company recently received the required permit for the construction of Pier G from the building inspectorate of the city of Frankfurt. Pier G was originally envisaged to be built after completion of the first construction phase of Terminal 3, including piers H and J. It will now be the first element of the new terminal to be completed.

By building the new pier earlier than planned, Fraport is responding to increased passenger growth. Slated to become operational in the summer season of 2021, Pier G will initially expand the airport’s capacity by four to five million passengers.

The new pier will be built as a fully functional, state-of-the-art passenger handling facility and later integrated into the new premium Terminal 3. Pier G will feature lean processes that enable passengers to get to their flights quickly and easily by the shortest possible paths.

Construction of Pier G will be carried out by a general contractor. The contract will be awarded by early 2019 on the basis of an EU-wide invitation to tender. Fraport Ausbau Süd GmbH, a fully owned subsidiary of Fraport AG, will take responsibility for monitoring and coordinating the construction project.
