Airbus A321 cargo: Vallair places the first at Qantas

Qantas just committed for a first Airbus A321 converted in cargo or A321P2F leased from the company Vallair. The aircraft will be operated on behalf of Australia Post.

Qantas Airways will take its first Airbus A321 converted in a cargo aircraft by the Luxembourg company Vallair, specialized in aircraft disassembly when ending life cycle as well as in trading, leasing and aircraft and engines repair. The aircraft (MSN 835) is expected to be delivered in 2020 and will be operated on behalf of Australia Post. Indeed, the latter and Qantas have a strategic partnership spread over seven years — giving Australia Post’s customers access to the airline’s freighters and luggage bays of its passengers aircraft. The partnership stipulates Qantas will, in the end, operate three Airbus A321 converted in freighter aircraft. Renamed A321P2F, the aircraft can carry 14 containers on the main deck and an additional 10 in the bay. That gives this Airbus A321 a total capacity of 27.9 tonnes on a flying range of 2,300 NM. In April 2018, Vallair finalized the purchase of six A321 manufactured between 1997 and 1999 — one of which being the MSN 835 placed at Qantas, while the others are the MSN 891, 677, 827, 968 and 974.

Launched in 2015, the conversion program of A321 in A321P2F, are the result of a collaboration between the Singaporean company ST Aerospace, Airbus and EFW. ST Aerospace is responsable from the technical development phase until the approval of the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the USA. For its part, Airbus supports the program providing data on the original equipment and a support with the certification, while EFW leads the global program and manages marketing and sales.
